In light of the extended quarantine, I'd be writing about the places I have been to stave the boredom that is exacerbated by certain factors of national incompetence. In short, I'm very pissed but cannot eat my way out of it. I'll call everything I write during this as a Pre-ECQ Timewalk, because I also miss playing Magic the Gathering too and Timewalk is a broken card in that game.
Here I go.
So I have been a banker for nearly a decade when I found myself resigning from my current stable job to uphold certain principles in life. Whether that was a smart and/or futile decision, time will tell. But 15 days later (and incidentally a day after an additional year of a dateless Valentines Days), I find myself walking through Abad Santos Street in search of something.
Nostalgia crept in as I saw Ling Nam. However this is not the Ling Nam I grew up with. The one in Binondo was the one I usually frequented since my childhood till the first year or so of being a banker.
The Place:
1. Proximity: 5/5 - It's a 15-minute walk from my home. Close and convenient.
2. Parking: 1/5 - Don't expect to park here. The building complex that houses 5 other businesses share 7 slots. The street parking is a bit of a hassle with the local tambays. Serenitea has exclusive access to the back lot parking of the building last I checked but it seems to be blocked off now.
3. Interior: 2/5 - It doesn't have the old shop look, nor does it have the clean new look. The place is small, having 4-6 tables seating 4 persons each. The kitchen is exposed behind the counters, something I'd rather not see in a sit-down to eat place.
The Service:
1. Crew: 3/5 - I'm conflicted to score this one. On the one hand they are equipped and are usually welcoming. But there were instances that it didn't happen when managers are around.
2. Service: 3/5 - This branch, despite being a small one is a tad too slow. It takes considerable time to serve the bill. Since the orders are cooked or heated as ordered, I don't mind waiting but the bill is a different story altogether.
The Food:
1. Selection: 4/5 - I don't expect their selection to be wide as this is a small store. But for limited walk-ins with their focus on pick-ups both by customers or couriers, it is good enough.
So I went inside and got my usual side order: 2 orders of Siomai (P85 / order of 2 pieces).
2. Taste: 4/5 - Same nostalgic taste. Just a bit crumbly compared to their old shop in Binondo.
3. Price: 4/5 - Accounting for the inflation and retaining relatively the same size, this one is still worth it. I just can't go eat it every day as it will break my wallet.
Overall, this place is an outlet of the original. It served to satisfy the nostalgia and stave off what was bothering at that time. Along with a good walk, this trip was well worth it.
