It's been a while since I wrote about food. My interest for it fell out after I stopped going on regular food trips. In an effort to keep part of it alive, I'll be writing about the places I've been through the food I ate.
I'll just expand my initial food review in another platform Looloo. (or shorten it there if I choose to replicate the review there) Here though, I'll be writing my ratings a bit differently. I'll score the Food, the Place, and the People in the Criteria that I felt stood out at the time.
For this slight return to blogging, I'll recall my visit to Oyasumi Ramen.
A. Place:
1. Proximity - 5/5
Oyasumi is a place that is just a few minutes from my house on foot.
2. Parking - 2/5
Parking space dedicated for the shop is quite small. At most, it can take 2-5 in the day time, all five if you go there a couple of hours before closing.
3. Interior - 4/5
While the interior is small with signs of wear, it is still well kept and quiet enough for everyone t hear each other. The ground floor is good for eating alone or with a friend, just avoid the stove area. Seats upstairs can seat groups of 2-8 people comfortably though only a couple of seats have backrests per long table.
Bonus:
They have a projector showing a Japanese movie or Animé but sadly they didn't play the sounds of the Animé being shown at the time but rather a JPop song.
B. Service:
1. Crew - 5/5
The Crew were attentive to our needs and had their own preferences on the food when asked which ones are good. They even told us what the food tastes like so it gave a good impression that the management at the very least let their own people taste their food to empower them to recommend and answer the all-important question "Which one is better for you?"
2. Speed - 5/5
No considerable wait time for your food and in between dishes. Serving order is also okay though it'd still be best if you say which ones you want to come out first.
C. Food:
1. Selection - 3/5
The food selection isn't wide but I think it is intentional. I would've liked that they expanded a bit on their appetizers and Ramen menu. One or two additional items would be okay.
2. Taste, and Price - I'll rate each item individually according to these 2 Criteria.
a. Gyoza (P150)
> Taste - 3/5
I like the crunchy outer texture of the Gyoza where most of the wrap is seared to a crunch except for the savry core. There was a generous mix of ginger in the ground pork which threw me off from fully appreciating the Gyoza. Despite this, it still is okay for me. A good bonus here is that it's not messy to eat even when the meat area is soft
> Price - 3/5
While I'm sort of okay with the number of Gyoza on the plate, the price against the serving size / quantity is a bit high if you only my impression of the product is the sole factor.
Overall, the Gyoza, while small, is quite different compared to what is served in other Japanese restaurants. Imagine a slightly flatter, larger, and rounder Pinsec Frito.(Check North Park)If you like a crunchy but savory dumpling with a spicy kick without chucking chili on it, this one is a good pick for you.
b. Iekei Ramen (P370)
>Taste - 5/5
The noodles were "al dente" (as my aunt and uncle would say) and the Chasu was delicious. The egg was also cooked well with that gooey core which made it more delicious. The Nori, Spinach and Leeks (or chives - I didn't pay attention) gave a good contast. The soup was a bit bland alone but complemented the Cheesy Risotto which was usually paired with this item.
> Price - 4/5
Despite its rather small serving size, I think this item is better in terms of bang-for-buck situations. It is paired with the Cheesy Risotto (which is a whole different thing altogether) which ups its overall cost a bit.
Overall, the ramen is well made with the intentioned of being paired with other items on the menu. I just wished they had an automatic combo option for this both to highlight their rather unique pairing of Ramen and Cheesy Risotto. (I think this can help manage inventory as well as push sales too)
c. Cheesy Risotto (P80)
>Taste - 4/5
By itself, it is a savory concoction. But with it's intended pairing of the Ramen's leftover soup, this item becomes a uniquely great "finisher." Only in this restaurant did I stumble upon this kind of combination so you can eat your fill and finish off your meal without getting to the sweets section.
>Price - 3/5
Despite being one of the cheaper offerings in their menu, the small serving kind of makes this an economical challenge. Pairing it with the ramen will bump you bill to near P500 levels counting other charges.
Overall, this is still one of the most unique items for a meal that I ever had. I usually don't look to sweets to finish my meal but rather the savory stuff. (like soup) Bonus: I was able to get this as the other times I did go to eat in the retaurant, this item was sold out.
Oyasumi has limited space and menu but is relatively big in other departments like taste and product quality. You have to be willing to spend as much as P500 to eat here so budget is a definite limiting factor apart from parking space. (if you drive)
